The Rockstead DON T-ZDP is a large Japanese fixed blade built around ZDP189 clad by VG10, Rockstead’s distinctive Tanto-Honzukuri blade geometry, an ebony-and-silver handle made in the tradition of Sashimono woodworking, and a dedicated wood micarta sheath with Rockstead’s Flection lock system.
The blade is made from ZDP189 clad by VG10 and hardened to approximately HRc67. This construction places Rockstead’s extremely hard ZDP189 cutting core within a clad blade structure, combining high edge retention with the stability expected from a large fixed knife. The most distinctive feature of the DON T-ZDP is its Tanto-Honzukuri blade shape. It is not a simple flat tanto profile, but a Tanto-convex geometry: Rockstead’s Honzukuri logic adapted to a blade form with stronger Japanese tanto character. The convex bevels are mirror-finished, while the blade’s flat section remains matte, creating a deliberate contrast between optical reflection and restrained surface texture. The absence of distortion in the reflected image is not merely a visual effect; it is evidence of the exceptional accuracy and smoothness of the convex bevels, combined with Rockstead’s extremely fine polishing.
The handle is made from multiple pieces of ebony wood and silver plates, joined in the tradition of Sashimono — 指物. In Japanese cabinetmaking, Sashimono refers to a highly precise joinery method where wooden parts are connected without visible nails or screws. On the DON T-ZDP, the handle components are fitted through complex internal grooves and joints, so tightly that the seams are almost invisible from the outside. This construction gives the handle a quiet architectural quality. The dark density of ebony is interrupted by silver but not decorated in a superficial way; the metal becomes part of the handle’s structure and rhythm. The KOI menuki is made by silver casting, adding a traditional Japanese motif through material relief rather than surface ornament.
The DON T-ZDP is supplied with a dedicated wood micarta sheath using Rockstead’s Flection lock system. The sheath is not treated as a simple cover, but as part of the complete object: it protects the blade, controls retention, and preserves the polished cutting system when the knife is not in use.
With an overall length of 257 mm, a 134 mm blade, 5.2 mm blade thickness, and a weight of 245 g, the DON T-ZDP stands close to the UN-ZDP in scale but expresses a different construction language: Tanto-Honzukuri blade geometry, ZDP189 clad steel, mirror-finished convex bevels, matte blade flats, Sashimono ebony-and-silver handle construction, silver-cast KOI (Carp) menuki, and a precisely fitted wood micarta sheath.
Each Rockstead knife is supplied with an individual passport showing its serial number and actual measured blade hardness, confirming that the hardness value is recorded for the specific knife, not only stated as a general model specification.
