The Rockstead RIN-ZDP BG (Beige) is one of Rockstead’s most refined compact folders, combining a ZDP189 Honzukuri blade, a button lock, Rockstead’s hidden clip system, and a titanium handle fitted with specially patterned ebonite scales.
  The name RIN — 凛 — means dignified in Japanese. In this model, the word reflects the knife’s character precisely: compact, composed, mechanically clean, and visually restrained. Its dignity comes from proportion, controlled construction, and the quiet precision of its design.
Within Rockstead’s lineup, the RIN-ZDP BG continues the gentleman’s knife direction introduced by the NEHAN series, but expands it into a larger, more mechanically complex format. It retains the refined character of a compact carry knife while adding an 85 mm Honzukuri blade and a hidden clip system.
The blade is made from ZDP189 and hardened to approximately HRc67. Combined with a thin 3.2 mm blade and a very fine polished edge, this hardness gives the RIN-ZDP its ultimate cutting character. In Rockstead’s Manila rope cutting test, the RIN-ZDP exceeded 800 cuts.
  The blade uses Rockstead’s Honzukuri convex geometry, with a mirror-polished convex cutting surface set against a matte blade plane. This contrast is not only visual; it reflects a distinctly Japanese understanding of light and shadow. The matte surface absorbs light and adds depth to the blade, while the Honzukuri surface catches light with extreme clarity.
If the entire blade were mirror-polished, it would risk becoming visually flat and chrome-like. If it were entirely matte, the convex geometry would lose much of its optical expression.
  The mirror finish also reveals the accuracy of the geometry. A convex surface normally distorts reflection, and any small irregularity, waviness, or micro-facet in the polishing would immediately break the reflected image. On Rockstead’s Honzukuri surface, the reflection remains undistorted because the convex radius is continuous and controlled from the blade plane down toward the cutting edge.
This is especially difficult to produce near the transition between the matte surface and the mirror-polished convex section. If the polishing process rounds over this boundary, the line becomes visually soft, and the reflection loses definition. On the RIN-ZDP BG, the separation between matte shadow and mirror light remains sharp, showing that the blade is not merely polished but shaped and finished with high control.
  The handle is built on a titanium structure and fitted with specially patterned ebonite scales. The material has a dark base almost covered by natural beige veining, creating an irregular organic pattern reminiscent of natural stone.
The surface of the ebonite scales is further shaped with a Naguri-inspired texture, derived from a traditional Japanese woodworking technique historically used on architectural elements such as pillars, walls in Japanese castles, and temples. On the RIN-ZDP BG, the Naguri texture works with the stone-like ebonite pattern, giving the handle tactile depth and visual complexity.
The construction of the handle is especially clean. The frame screws, scale-fastening screws, and pivot hardware are not exposed on the handle's outer surface. They are concealed within the structure, allowing the handle to appear visually uninterrupted and reinforcing the impression of a monolithic object.
  The button lock provides the RIN-ZDP BG with controlled, mechanically precise action. Opening and closing are solid and deliberate, with a very pleasant clicking sound. The blade does not snap out casually or loosely; it moves with measured resistance and locks without any visible or tactile hint of play. The result is a strong impression of tight tolerances, careful fitting, and a compact high-end mechanism integrated into a rigid structure.
  The handle shape is ergonomic and designed for controlled cutting. Its geometry allows the index finger to be placed safely on the choil, giving the user a shorter, more precise grip when finer control of the blade is needed. At the rear of the handle, a lanyard hole is integrated into the titanium end section, preserving the clean external form while adding a practical carry option.
  One of the key features of the RIN-ZDP BG is Rockstead’s hidden clip system. When the clip is not needed, it can be pressed into the back of the handle, leaving the grip surface clean and unobstructed during use. When carry is required, the clip can be extended again. This preserves the convenience of a pocket clip without the usual discomfort of a fixed external clip under the hand.

Each Rockstead knife is supplied with an individual passport showing its serial number and actual measured blade hardness, confirming that the hardness value is recorded for the specific knife rather than stated as a general model specification.
