The Rockstead DON-ZDP is a large Japanese sheath knife built around ZDP189 clad steel, Honzukuri geometry, a SUS440C guard, a titanium pommel, and an Ironwood handle embellished with artificial opal and silver. The blade is made from ZDP189 clad by VG10 and hardened to approximately HRc67. This construction places Rockstead’s extremely hard ZDP189 cutting core within a clad blade structure, combining long-term edge retention with the stability expected from a large, fixed knife.
The DON-ZDP uses Rockstead’s Honzukuri blade geometry. The convex bevels are mirror-finished, while the blade’s flat section remains matte, creating a deliberate contrast between optical reflection and restrained surface texture. The absence of distortion in the reflected image is not merely a visual effect; it is evidence of the exceptional accuracy and smoothness of the convex Honzukuri bevels, combined with Rockstead’s extremely fine polishing.
The handle is made from Ironwood, a dense hardwood valued for its weight, stability, and deep natural grain. Against this dark organic surface, Rockstead places a precise composition of artificial opal and silver. The embellishment is not treated as simple decoration; it creates a controlled point of light within the handle, contrasting mineral-like reflection with the density of the wood. The guard is machined from SUS440C, giving the front of the handle a hard, stainless structural boundary between blade and grip. The titanium pommel, positioned at the butt end of the handle, provides a clean metallic termination and completes the rear structure of the handle assembly.
The DON-ZDP is fully disassemblable, but only with Rockstead’s dedicated tool, which is sold separately. Owner disassembly is not recommended unless necessary. The knife is built as a precisely fitted system, and unnecessary disassembly may disturb the fit, finish, or original adjustment of the handle components.
The DON-ZDP is supplied with a dedicated sheath made from specially stabilized plywood and Kydex parts, with natural leather elements. Rockstead avoids a fully leather sheath because leather can absorb moisture and may create an unstable environment for a mirror-polished blade. The sheath secures the blade through a high-precision friction mechanism. This mechanism holds the blade in place through precise contact pressure rather than a mechanical latch or button. A secondary leather strap, closed with a snap fastener, adds a second point of retention against accidental release during vigorous movement.
The knife is presented in a kiri-bako made from paulownia wood. On the box, 守護 — Shugo is written by hand in the tradition of Shodō calligraphy. Inside the lid, there is an explanation: “True protection (Shugo) means being protected while protecting others. To protect is to stand up for what is right and to follow true principles. By doing so, a person receives protection in return.”
With its ZDP189 clad blade, Honzukuri convex geometry, mirror-finished bevels, matte blade flats, Ironwood handle, SUS440C guard, titanium pommel, artificial opal and silver embellishment, dedicated friction-locking sheath, and kiri-bako presentation, the DON-ZDP expresses a quieter and more material-driven character than the silk-wrapped UN series or the Sashimono-built DON T-ZDP.
Each Rockstead knife is supplied with an individual passport showing its serial number and actual measured blade hardness, confirming that the hardness value is recorded for the specific knife, not only stated as a general model specification.
