The Rockstead RYO-H-ZDP Blue is a compact high-end folding knife built around Rockstead’s essential cutting system: a ZDP189 Honzukuri blade, a slim 3.2 mm blade thickness, a blue titanium handle, and Rockstead’s licensed concealed clip mechanism. With a full length of 196 mm and an 80 mm blade, the RYO-H-ZDP Blue sits between a gentleman’s knife and a compact technical folder. It is small enough for refined everyday carry, but its construction, blade steel, and hidden clip system give it a much more complex character than an ordinary compact folding knife.
The blade outline is inspired by Higonokami, one of the most recognizable traditional Japanese folding knife forms. Rockstead does not reproduce that form as nostalgia. Instead, the RYO-H-ZDP Blue translates the Higonokami idea into a modern precision folder: cleaner, more controlled, and built around high-hardness steel, convex geometry, and advanced handle construction. The blade is made from ZDP189 and hardened to approximately HRc67. Combined with Rockstead’s thin blade stock and very fine polished edge, this hardness gives the RYO-H-ZDP Blue its main cutting character: clean, low-resistance slicing and long-term edge retention under controlled use. The blade uses Rockstead’s Honzukuri convex geometry. Instead of treating the cutting edge as a separate secondary bevel, Honzukuri forms the blade into a continuous convex surface that supports the edge and helps the knife move through material with less resistance. This is one of the reasons Rockstead knives feel different from conventional production folders.The mirror-polished convex surface is not only a visual signature. On a convex blade, polishing quality reveals the accuracy of the form. Any waviness, micro-facet, or uneven transition would disturb the reflection. On the RYO-H-ZDP Blue, the clean mirror surface shows that the blade is not merely polished, but shaped and finished with exceptional control.
The handle is made from titanium with a blue finish, giving the knife a calm but distinctly technical appearance. The handle design is minimal and architectural, keeping the focus on the blade geometry and mechanical construction rather than decorative excess.
One of the most important features of the RYO-H-ZDP Blue is Rockstead’s concealed clip system. When the clip is not needed, it can be recessed into the handle, leaving the grip surface clean and more comfortable in the hand. When pocket carry is required, the clip can be extended again. This gives the knife the convenience of a pocket clip without the usual discomfort of a fixed external clip under the palm. The concealed clip mechanism is used under U.S. patents licensed from Mr. Joseph Caswell.
At 124 g, the RYO-H-ZDP Blue has enough weight to feel solid but remains compact and controlled. The result is a Rockstead folder with a clear identity: traditional Japanese blade inspiration, modern titanium construction, concealed carry logic, and ZDP189 Honzukuri cutting performance in a compact format. Each Rockstead knife is supplied with an individual passport showing its serial number and actual measured blade hardness, confirming that the hardness value is recorded for the specific knife rather than stated only as a general model specification.
